Dave Chappelle has sort of re-invented himself in recent years as a comedian less focused on unapologetically incisive comedy and more on just being unapologetically incisive.
His comedy has taken a hit and he has gravitated more toward social commentary that often makes people outraged and indignant.
Judge for yourself whether that's a smart professional and personal move for the man. But Dave Chappelle himself is making no bones about it:
Backlash be damned, Dave Chappelle is apparently basking in the glory of being canceled.
The veteran comedian received a standing ovation and a raucous fireworks display at the Hollywood Bowl on Thursday night during a screening of his untitled documentary — as if he hadn't just been widely criticized for transphobic remarks he made in his new Netflix special, "The Closer."
"If this is what being canceled is like, I love it," the 48-year-old Chappelle said onstage in response to the standing O, according to several reports.
This is how it's done, folks.
Now, there are a few caveats here. Dave Chappelle has had a stratospherically successful career; even if he is, somehow, "cancelled," he can pretty much walk out with the satisfaction of having been one of the world's biggest stars for several decades.
Plus, he has a ton of money. So it's not like he is in any danger of missing a mortgage payment if he loses a contract.
Still: He's showing us how to do it. In a world in which virtually every single celebrity—and nearly every single average person—folds complacently before the Woke Mob, Chappelle is simply shrugging it off.
That's what everyone—celebrities, laymen, everyone—needs to do; it's the first, and perhaps most critical, step in fighting back.
It requires no small amount of bravery, to be sure. But you'll be better for it. Don't fold before the Woke Mafia. Be like Dave Chappelle.
