Stephen Colbert, a "devout Catholic" whose faith is important to him and someone who the late evangelical powerhouse Tim Keller once praised as a great example of a "faithful presence" continues to show that he's nothing of the sort.

Cynthia Erivo is playing Jesus Christ in the play Jesus Christ Superstar, a first for a "queer black woman," and Stephen Colbert thinks it's about time!

I'm so excited that in August you're going to be playing Jesus in Jesus Christ Superstar at the Hollywood Bowl. First woman to play Jesus in a major production, long overdue. I've said for years I'd love to see a woman in that part.

I'll admit, I have never watched the musical (the idea has always seemed a little blasphemous to me). However, I doubt that any normal person watching a play about Jesus would come away thinking, "Man, Jesus should really be played by a queer black lady."

But Stephen Colbert, renowned Catholic, thinks that Cynthia Erivo will make the perfect Jesus.
