Disney to roll back DEI initiatives, will "focus more closely on business outcomes" instead

Disney finally joins the long list of companies ditching their DEI initiatives after years of public backlash.

From Axios:

The changes, while less dramatic than those introduced by other Fortune 500 companies in recent weeks, speak to the pressure brands face trying to adjust to new expectations in the second Trump era.

Zoom in: In a note to employees sent Tuesday morning, chief human resources officer Sonia Coleman outlined ways Disney's DEI efforts will change.

There are two parts to Disney getting rid of their racist and discriminatory DEI policies.

First, they're dropping their "Reimagine Tomorrow" program.

Reimagine Tomorrow had all kinds of great DEI catch phrases like:

  • Embrace discomfort and humility

  • Ideologies like 'All Lives Matter' and 'I don't see color' are harmful and hurtful

  • Do not question or debate Black colleagues' lived experience.

But Disney is dropping all that racist/illegal stuff, for something much more important for a company.

Disney is 'changing its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs to focus more closely on business outcomes.'

That's right, now that Trump is in office, even Disney has suddenly decided they might want to be a company again instead of political activists.

In addition, they're rolling back the Content Advisories that appear before classic cartoons and movies on Disney+, like Peter Pan and Swiss Family Robinson.

The advisories used to read:

This program includes negative depictions and/or mistreatment of people or cultures. These stereotypes were wrong then and are wrong now. Rather than remove this content, we want to acknowledge its harmful impact, learn from it and spark conversation to create a more inclusive future together.

Disney is committed to creating stories with inspirational and aspirational themes that reflect the rich diversity of the human experience around the globe.

But now, while the content still seems to have an advisory, it's lacking all the DEI mumbo jumbo.

It simply reads:

This program is presented as originally created and may contain stereotypes or negative depictions.

Fair enough.

Now, we just have to see if they'll follow through on these decisions in the future content they create.
