Look, everyone knows that Donald Trump was and is better on his feet than President Joe Biden. The former was lightning-quick, funny, savage, insightful in a brash sort of way; the latter honestly seems uncertain of where he's standing 90 percent of the time.
But sometimes, man, the gap between these two men is just painfully apparent. This, for instance, is apparently what passes for an insult in Joe Biden-land:
Huh? What does that even mean? I can't even figure out the context of this jab in theory, let alone practice. It's just embarrassing and uncomfortable.
Trump, meanwhile, is so good at insults that he can even insult the people on his own side and it's an absolute winner. Here he is at a rally for Ohio Senate candidate J.D. Vance last week (language warning):
Former President Trump drew more than 6,000 fans for a rally Saturday evening in this industrial northeast Ohio city โ and mocked venture capitalist J.D. Vance, his pick in the state's surprisingly tight U.S. Senate race, in the process.
"J.D. is kissing my ass. Of course he wants my support," Trump told the crowd.
"The entire MAGA movement is for J.D. Vance," he added.
That's rough stuff, because it's true: J.D. Vance is kind of kissing Trump's you-know-what. That's because he has previously been a very, very fierce critic of Trump, and now he needs Trump's support.
You can view it as pathetic or you can view it as cynically calculative or whatever you want. But Trump's going to wring the fun out of it no matter what. And in Trump's defense, he has openly admitted that he's helping Vance purely as a political calculus in his own right:
He's a guy that said some bad [expletive] about me. He did," Trump told the crowd at an April rally in Cleveland. "But I have to do what I have to do. We have to pick somebody that can win."
Whatever your thoughts on either men, there's no denying that it's more fun watching Trump hold court than it is watching Joe Biden wander around lost and confused.
