Trump loves talking to reporters and telling them whatever is on his mind, and on Monday, he was thinking about how we used to win wars in America, instead of occupying countries before leaving billions in advanced weaponry for the enemy.
One of the things that was different then was what we called the department in charge of the Armed Forces. Prior to 1947, it wasn't called the Department of Defense, it was called the Department of War.
Trump thinks we should go back to that way of thinking.
On behalf of the Department of Defense? Defense? I don't want to be defense only. We want defense but we want offense, too, if that's OK. As the Department of War, we won everything, and I think we're going to have to go back to that.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth commented from the back:
That's coming soon, sir.
1947 was actually the last year America was officially at war.
Everything since then has been "police actions," "military excursions," and "peacekeeping operations," despite tens of thousands of Americans killed on battlefields around the world in these non-wars.
If we changed it back to the Department of War, we might actually have to have Congress approve our endless military "activities" (you know, like the Constitution says?).
