Asheville resident David Oppenheimer was recently lounging on a chair in his carport when he heard his Ring doorbell camera chime on his phone. He instinctively looked over... needless to say, he was a little surprised to see a bear standing just a few feet away from him.

Oppenheimer told ABC13 in Asheville,

It definitely startled me, more because it was unexpected than because it was a bear, and it seems startled, too.

Asheville residents like Oppenheimer are used to seeing black bears on a regular basis, but usually, they keep their distance. Oppenheimer did manage to stay calm after his initial surprise, and thankfully the bear left the same way he came.

Oppenheimer continued,

When it happened, we made eye contact, and I was thinking you're not supposed to make eye contact with a bear, but we were making eye contact, and I wasn't sure what to do next.I thought to move my eyes to look a little bit away, but I wanted to be prepared to scare the bear if it came at me.

Both the bear and the man may have suffered a little temporary increase in blood pressure, but it's worth it for the video.

Oppenheimer made sure to let everyone know he's not really afraid of bears, just in case you were confused.

The bears here are very peaceful. This one just caught me off guard.
