It's always a terrible thing when a drunk driver kills someone, but Texas, in this case, is at least trying to mitigate some of the damage:
A new law in Texas is now requiring convicted drunk drivers to pay child support for children whose parents they killed.
On Friday, House Bill 393 was passed which stated that people convicted of intoxicated manslaughter are responsible for child support for the children of their victims and are expected to make payments until the child is 18 or graduates high school.
For those who have been locked up for their crimes, "payments are expected to be made no later than the first anniversary of their release date." You can't get out of this because you spent time in the clink.
The legislation stipulates that courts "shall determine an amount for restitution" based upon various factors including the financial needs of both the child(ren) and any surviving spouses, the "standard of living to which the child is accustomed" and "the physical and emotional condition of the child and the child's educational needs."
Texas becomes the second state to pass such a law, following Tennessee last year.
