So apparently Australia has a drinking problem, cuz, uhhh…
On Thursday afternoon, in an effort to raise awareness of Australia's drunk driving problem, Redland City Mayor Karen Williams hosted a video meeting with families of drunk driving victims. During the meeting she said the city needs to "Clean up the drunk driving," and even called for tougher sentencing.
An hour after this meeting, Mayor Williams would drive her car across four lanes and crash into a tree.
Mayor Williams was drunk.
And here's the thing: I have to assume she was drinking her scrumptious Outback wine during that very important drunk driving meeting an hour earlier.
How else do you get that drunk in such a brief period of time?
Luckily, nobody was injured in the crash—besides maybe the tree—but residents were quick to call for Williams' resignation:
Williams said she made "a serious error of judgment" and was "deeply regretful" after her drunk driving crash. She stepped down from the Brisbane Olympics 2032 board on Sunday. However, she is resisting calls for her resignation.
"I made a mistake, I will learn from that mistake, and I will continue to serve my community as I have for the last 18 years," she said in a statement to local outlets.
So she resigned from the Olympics board?!?!
Really?!?!
At that point, you should just resign from your position as mayor.
But that's just me.
Oh, and look at this:
Police have not charged Williams.
I wonder why…
