Not sure if we're all aware here, but you don't use profanity on stage at the Grand Ole' Opry. You just don't. It's a family-friendly environment in there.
Another thing you don't do — especially during a show which is a tribute to Dolly Parton — you don't botch the lyrics to a Dolly Parton song. Huge rule.
Well, Elle King, the highly overrated pop country singer out of Ohio, managed to do both of these things last Friday night — and she did it all while drunk out of her mind.
Watch:
"Hi, my name is Elle King, I'm f****** hammered."
Yeah, not the best start.
And then you can't even sing the lyrics so you just curse and mumble and blame the crowd for your idiocy? Real classy stuff right there.
At one point, King even mocked the fans for purchasing tickets to the show, explaining, "I'm not even gonna (curses) lie … y'all bought tickets for this (curses), you ain't getting your money back."
Now, I've seen Elle King live and I'll tell you right now this is pretty much what you get when you see her play: A sloppy drunk lady who can't sing. So it's hard for me to understand why they'd offer her a spot singing on Dolly's birthday, though I'm sure they'll never make that mistake again.
The Grand Ole' Opry apologized after the performance:
[W]e deeply regret and apologize for the language that was used during last night's second Opry performance.
How embarrassing. I honestly wonder if Elle King even remembers being out on stage. Such a shame.
It looks like Elle King has postponed some of her upcoming shows due to backlash over this incident. She might consider checking into rehab while she's got the time.
On a more positive note, I'm gonna leave you with this performance by Ashley Monroe from the same Dolly tribute show:
Now that's how you honor the queen!
