“Extremely honest” menu of Montreal Chinese restaurant draws laughs (and crowds)
· Jan 16, 2021 · NottheBee.com

Twitter user Kim Belair loves her some Chinese food. And she's got a favorite Chinese joint in Montreal called Aunt Dai's — where "honesty" is on the menu — literally.

"Aunt Dai is my favourite Chinese restaurant in Montreal, but the REAL treat is the menu, featuring extremely honest commentary from the owner," said Belair in her now viral Tweet.

Here's some examples:

"[T]his one is not THAT good ... It's your call."

Seriously?! So I think I'll pass. I mean, does anyone actually ever order this dish?

Why even say that?!

"We don't want them to come with high expectations and then feel disappointed." -- Feigang Fei, owner

Ahhh, well that explains it.

So then there's this one ...

"Since I have so high expectation on this dish, I am not a huge fan of our version to be honest."

Ummmm, okay. So maybe I'll pass on this one, too.

Well, maybe I'll try the Satay Sauce Beef ...

"I did NOT have chance to try this one yet."

Well, let us know when you do, will ya?! We're getting hungry!

"I still don't have chance to taste it. Looks like I should spend more time eating in my own restaurant."

Do ya think?

One more try -- the piece de resistance ...

"Don't expect it to be SO tasty but it's a safe choice ..."

Okay, so that's the standard we're shooting for ... it's SAFE! Phew!

What on earth?!

In an interview, Fei said the whole thing started with his concern that customers, unfamiliar with Chinese food, were ordering blindly, so they were often unsatisfied with their choices. Ultimately, he said he just wanted to be "very honest, very true to ourselves and our customers."

"We are not always the best food restaurant, but we try to do our best every day and to satisfy our customers and not oversell anything."

Trust us, you are NOT overselling anything. But, all that honesty, coupled with some supposedly tasty (not to mention safe!) selections is really paying off. Fei says the menu and the viral Tweet have been "very, very good for our business."

Good for you Fei! Good for Aunt Dai's! Honesty really is the best policy!

We would have loved to have given you a peek at the whole menu, but a) the online menu is in French and b) it doesn't boast the "extremely honest" commentary like their print menu does. So these snippets will just have to leave you hungry for more.
