A newborn baby was surrendered at a Montgomery Fire Department last month after a Safe Haven Baby Box was installed in Alabama's capital city this May.
Montgomery Fire/Rescue announced the news in a social media post earlier this month, commending the birth mother, posting,
We are deeply grateful to the courageous mother who, in a time of crisis, made the difficult decision to seek help and ensure her child's safety. While her identity will remain completely anonymous, her decision represents love, bravery, and hope.
This milestone shows why Safe Haven Baby Boxes are so important. They provide parents in crisis with a safe, compassionate option while giving children the chance to thrive in loving homes.
This box is one of 19 that have been installed since January 2024 as part of Alabama's Safe Haven initiative. Four infants have been safely surrendered since the program began.
The Mayor of Montgomery said in a statement,
This Safe Haven Baby Box reflects Montgomery's commitment to compassion, dignity, and the safety of our children. Every child deserves a chance at life, and every parent deserves access to resources that protect them during their most difficult moments. This is about ensuring no child is left without care, and no parent is left without hope.
Safe Haven Baby Boxes are currently available in 23 states as a way for women in crisis to anonymously surrender their babies to the appropriate authorities.
