The first woman to serve on the Supreme Court, Sandra Day O'Connor, has passed away at the age of 93 from complications related to dementia.
In nominating O'Connor for the bench in 1981, President Ronald Reagan called her "truly a person for all seasons, possessing those unique qualities of temperament, fairness, intellectual capacity, and devotion to the public good which have characterized the 101 brethren who have preceded her."
O'Connor helped liberal justices pen the Casey decision in an abortion-expanding case involving Planned Parenthood, and would regularly side with liberals on the court.
O'Connor retired from the Supreme Court in 2006 to help take care of her husband. She was replaced with conservative Bush appointee Samuel Alito.
O'Connor's husband passed away in 2009 and she leaves behind three sons.
