Former Sen. Joe Lieberman dead at 82

A familiar name on the U.S. political scene has gone to his reward:

Former Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman, who represented the Nutmeg State in Washington for 24 years and was the Democratic Party's 2000 vice presidential nominee, has died.

He was 82.

A statement from Lieberman's family said he passed away Wednesday in New York after suffering complications from a fall.

Lieberman served as a U.S. senator from 1989 to 2013. Born in Connecticut, he served in the state legislature before a stint as state attorney general. He was well-known for having publicly criticized Bill Clinton during the sordid Monica Lewinsky affair, though he ultimately voted against removing Clinton from office in the subsequent impeachment trial.

He was also known for his sharp criticism of violent video games, including leading the 1993-1994 Senate hearings on violence in gaming. Threats from Congress eventually led to the creation of the Entertainment Software Ratings Board, the group that puts those little lettered ratings on video game boxes:

For better or worse, he will likely be immortalized as one-half of the 2000 Gore/Lieberman presidential ticket. Remember all those signs?

Never content to stop clowning itself, the election deniers at The New York Times phrased Lieberman's loss in 2000 this way:

A devoted Jew, Lieberman's family kept kosher and observed the Jewish Sabbath. He leaves behind a wife, Hadassah, as well as three children.

RIP.
