We all know that men can sometimes fall short in the empathy department.
To illustrate the way men stereotypically empathize, here's a classic skit from Bob Newhart, "Stop It."
So when a diabetic wife was trying to explain what it was like to be hypoglycemic, it's no wonder that her husband shrugged and said that it didn't sound that bad.
Since experience is the best teacher, his wife decided to help him experience the feeling for himself.
She offered to inject him with a dose of her insulin.
And since men can also be notoriously dumb when it comes to risk taking, he didn't argue.
"His wife, aged 59, told the police that she administered insulin to him the day before going to bed, without him objecting in order to 'show him what it feels like to be in hypoglycemia' because he had told her that type 1 diabetes was a benign illness," said the public prosecutor of Saint-Brieuc, Nicolas Heitz.
"She called the firefighters, noting in the morning when she woke up that her spouse was unconscious. No dispute apparently preceded the injections."
Now, while insulin works miracles for folk who are diabetic and wouldn't survive without it, for those of us who are not diabetic, extra insulin removes too much sugar from the body too fast, causing severe hypoglycemia.
Severe hypoglycemia leads to seizures, then to loss of consciousness, brain damage, heart attack, and death, which is what happened in this case, as medical personnel were unable to reverse the condition.
Now, the wife is facing down murder charges in the death of her husband.
We can only hope that sometime in his final moments he reached that moment of empathy she wanted him to feel.
