How does someone kill four adults in a college town and police don't even have a suspect after nearly a week?

This is deeply, deeply weird and alarming and unsettling.

Five days after four University of Idaho students were found stabbed in their off-campus home, a deep sense of apprehension and grief is affecting the community as authorities work to identify a suspect.

The university's often-packed parking lots had many empty spots Thursday after scores of students decided to return home or leave the area after the quadruple homicide last weekend shocked the college town of Moscow, Idaho.

Note this line very well:

...as authorities work to identify a suspect.

Not "find" a suspect, not "locate" a suspect, but "identify" a suspect.

You're telling me it's been nearly a week and they don't even have a name yet?

Seriously. Few areas of practical science have advanced more in the past 50 years than criminal forensics. These guys can identify fibers found on the underside of combat boots and match them to the thrift store where the killer's sweater was bought.

It would seem exceedingly odd for police to have no named suspect nearly a week after a brutal quadruple homicide in a crowded college town.

And yet it seems like the police couldn't have less of a clue:

Investigators are speaking with the two surviving roommates, Idaho State Police Communications Director Aaron Snell told ABC.

"Potentially they are witnesses, potentially they are victims," Snell said in an interview with ABC's Kayna Whitworth. "Potentially they're the key to this whole thing."

Police have said they don't have a suspect. Snell said no one has been "included or excluded as a person of interest and/or a suspect."

Investigators hope the roommates will help them "figure out what occurred and why."

What on Earth happened to these poor students, and who is the monster that did it?
