An Indiana sheriff's deputy was dog-sitting for a neighbor and was attacked and killed by one of the "pit bull-type" dogs she was watching. A small child was also mauled and injured by the animal.
Police responded to a call about the attack and found the woman, Tamieka White, on the garage floor horrifically injured and she died on scene shortly after police arrived.
According to witnesses in the neighborhood, White's 8-year-old son ran out of the house crying for help, triggering the 911 call.
White's son was also injured in the attack and was taken to the hospital and is now in good condition.
Officers attempted to enter the residence, but were blocked by an aggressive dog.
They had to "destroy" the dog before they could get to White. She was pronounced dead on the scene.
It appears that White died protecting the boy. Brittany Seligman, the slain deputy's commander, said, "She died last night protecting the most important person in her life."
