The United Nations Human Rights Council Social Forum is taking place today and tomorrow in Geneva, Switzerland.
Out of all the UN members, for some insane reason, they chose Iran to chair the forum.
France, Germany, Canada, United States, Australia, Greece, Brazil, etc. - there were SO many better choices to chair a human rights forum than the Islamic Republic.
This happened less than one month since the barbaric attack on Israel by the Iran-backed terrorist group Hamas and a little over a year since the death of Mahas Amini, the 22-year-old woman who died after being detained and tortured to death by Iran's morality police for not wearing her hijab properly.
Why is one of the most genocidal regimes in human history the chair of a human rights council?
Is the UN really that tone-deaf, or is this intentional mockery?
The regime was appointed in May by the president of the UN Human Rights Council, and they had their chance to overturn the decision by a special meeting before today, but they didn't.
Josep Borrell, EU foreign affairs chief, defended Iran's appointment as a matter of regional rotation "in consistency with established UN procedures."
Hillel Neuer, executive director of UN Watch, the Geneva-based non-governmental organization whose stated mission is "to monitor the performance of the United Nations," spoke to the UN human rights council and challenged Iran's post.
It's time for all democracies at the UN to stop legitimizing murderous regimes, in violation of the world body's founding principles, and instead to begin holding the perpetrators to account.
Anyone have "Iran leading UN human rights forum" on your 2023 bingo card?
You couldn't (and wouldn't want to) make this stuff up!
What a time to be alive!...
