After years of speculation that it will eventually get into the auto business with its own vehicle, Apple is close to finalizing a deal with Hyundai-Kia to manufacture an Apple-branded autonomous electric vehicle at the Kia assembly plant in West Point, Georgia according to multiple sources who briefed CNBC on the plan.
Ready for this part?
"The first Apple Cars will not be designed to have a driver," said one source with knowledge of the current plan. "These will be autonomous, electric vehicles designed to operate without a driver and focused on the last mile."
There is speculation that the focus on autonomy could mean Apple is planning to make their first production car some sort of commercial-application product. Like robo-taxis or auto-delivery-trucks or something.
Apple is and always has been a maniacally end-user focused company. So I doubt that.
Tim Cook's entire job is to carry on the legacy of Steve Jobs. If he does that successfully here, the Apple car will be a consumer vehicle. And a phenom.
Here's hoping.
