Even for a man who seems to have relatively few political compunctions, this feels pretty low:
Fetterman attributes the depression in January not only to his stroke last May but also to what he calls a brutal campaign last fall.
"It was after the brutality of the campaign, the other side," Fetterman said. "Some people believe it was one of the most vicious political campaigns."
"The other side."
Look, depression is serious. It can and often does lead to suicide. It's a terrible condition that shouldn't be taken lightly nor made light of.
And I'm sorry, but blaming your depression on the Senate campaign of Mehmet Oz is making light of it. Mehmet Oz ran a pretty standard political campaign. It got nasty at times. Campaigns do that. There wasn't anything particularly notable about it in that regard.
If the milquetoast campaign of Mehmet Oz was enough to drive Fetterman into weeks and weeks of debilitating hospitalized depression, well, I'm not trying to be cruel here, but: He doesn't sound like he's ready for the hard-pressing rigors of Senate life. I don't know how you can conclude anything else.
CBS did follow that claim up with this line:
The senator does not blame Mehmet Oz in any way...
...which, I don't really know what that means. Seems pretty clear that he blamed him in some way.
