So The Art of The Deal is happening live at the White House right now, and the King of Jordan has just committed to taking in 2,000 Palestinian children "right away."
Trump said Monday that he would "conceivably withhold aid" from Egypt and Jordan if they refused to take in Palestinians, and this new commitment from Jordan is a step in the right direction for the negotiations.
It's a huge shift if you follow Middle Eastern politics. Compare this to what King Abdullah II said during the Biden admin:
For some context on why Jordan has said no to helping Palestinians, the vast majority of Jordanians are the exact same ethnic group as Palestinians. They simply found themselves on a different side of a border following WW1 and the fall of the Ottoman Empire. King Abdullah is part of the Hashemite minority, which doesn't want to become even more of a minority. These ethnic struggles are a major reason why Arab states do not take in refugees from other Arab nations.
The clowns at NPR like to repeat the official talking point though:
Jordan and other Arab countries have historically resisted accommodating more Palestinian refugees out of fear that it would weaken the case for a Palestinian state and the refugees' right to return.
Sure, whatever.
Now listen to what the king says of Trump:
We'll have to wait on word from Egypt.
More from NPR:
[Former Jordanian Foreign Minister Marwan] Muasher said the brake to Trump's plans could be Saudi resistance. Trump has made clear he wants to broker a normalization agreement between Saudi Arabia, the most powerful Gulf state, and Israel. Saudi Arabia last week said expelling Palestinians would stand in the way of any normalization talks.
It's gonna be tough to please everyone with this one, but then again, they said the Arabian Gulf states would never do business with Israel and Trump got that done! 👇
