This is a story about bottomless mimosas. It's also a story about college kids who cannot handle themselves on bottomless mimosas. It's a great story, and it tells you a lot about where we're headed as a culture.
Yes, ladies and gentlemen, I'm sure you've heard it before, but binge drinking is very bad. But this new generation of drinkers, they just have no idea what they're doing. So now, out in the Bay Area, brunch spots are having to charge cleaning fees for drunkards who throw up in the restaurant.
Yet dealing with patrons who lose their brunch is a reality for Bay Area restaurants offering the popular perk of bottomless mimosas. Particularly since the pandemic, they're finding that diners, often ones in their early to mid-20s, are drinking too much and vomiting in the bathrooms — or even right on their tables. The burden on servers and staff to clean up after these public pukers is reaching a fever pitch, making it necessary for restaurants to take precautions and even implement fees.
Here's just one example from of a sign which had to be put up in the bathroom at Kitchen Story in Oakland:
This is just one of many brunch destinations that has had to do this. Seriously, we're waiting on children at these places, though it looks like the signs have worked.
Kitchen Story co-owner Chaiporn Kitsadaviseksak said the sign has helped in preventing purging. He can't even recall having to actually charge any customers the cleanup fee. But, before the sign, it was a big problem.
Well, good thing about this is we know these college kids can read at least.
And that's a start.
Next, we'll hopefully be able to teach these kids how to hold their liquor.
Reminder: This is what it looks like when you drink bottomless mimosas:
