It is a question that has confounded even the greatest minds for thousands of years...
LeBron James commented on WNBA player Brittney Griner being detained in Russia, saying he would question whether he would want to return to the U.S. if he was in her situation.
"Now, how can [Griner] feel like America has her back? I would be feeling like, 'Do I even want to go back to America?'" James said in a trailer for The Shop: UNINTERRUPTED.
Griner has been detained in Russia since Feb. 17 after she was found with hashish oil vape cartridges at a Russian Airport. She pleaded guilty in Russian court last Thursday, adding that "there was no intent ... to break the law."
Compare LeBron's words with Griner and her lesbian partner Cherelle's own words on the situation.
Griner wrote a letter to President Joe Biden, saying she is "terrified" she may never leave Russia, pleading for his help.
"As I sit here in a Russian prison, alone with my thoughts and without the protection of my wife, family, friends, Olympic jersey, or any accomplishments, I'm terrified I might be here forever," Griner said.
"On the 4th of July, our family normally honors the service of those who fought for our freedom, including my father who is a Vietnam War Veteran. It hurts thinking about how I usually celebrate this day because freedom means something completely different to me this year."
Cherelle pleaded with Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris last week to bring back Brittney.
"I am grateful to [Biden and Harris] for the time they spent with me and for the commitment they expressed to getting [Brittney] home," Cherelle said.
"While I will remain concerned and outspoken until she is back home, I am hopeful in knowing that the president read my wife's letter and took the time to respond. I know B.G. will be able to find comfort in knowing she has not been forgotten."
Can we make a trade??
