Homeowner's Associations have their fair share of haters, and I'm about to help you understand why.
A Maryland family has a "modest" front-lit Nativity scene in their front yard for the Christmas season, but their HOA says they can't put it up because it's too distracting.
Homeowner: We're not disturbing anybody, the lights are certainly within the boundaries of our land. It's not going outside, it's not touching anybody's yard.
Here's NBC Today:
Members of the Salgado family, who reside in Germantown, Maryland, located about 26 miles from the the U.S. capital, were informed by their homeowners' association that they need to remove their holiday decorations or pay a fine of $650, the family told an NBC affiliate in Washington, D.C.
The fine will increase each day they don't take down their decorations, which Pahan Salgado described as 'very simple and very classic.'
The homeowner's lawyers argue that this nativity scene is being singled out by the homeowner's association.
And the Salgados aren't the only family being encroached on by their HOA this year.
This man sued his HOA after years of Christmas light battles and this year won "more than" $75k.
'They (HOA) ended up paying us significantly more, ironically, than the jury awarded us many years ago. The jury previously awarded us $75,000 (in 2019), and I will tell you that we actually settled for significantly more than $75,000,' Morris said.
Then we have this guy, Neil Heuer in North Carolina, whose 60,000 LED light show is just too much for the neighborhood:
He says they've complained that it brings too many unwanted visitors to the neighborhood.
'That's the argument. They say this is all private property. Our roads are owned by our HOA, so they're technically not public. However, if you're coming through here to deliver something, to visit somebody, to do anything, the roads are the roads. They're throughways. They're right of ways for people to pass,' Heuer said.
He says the HOA board sent him a letter addressing their complaints. He declined to show the letter in case of any possible litigation.
Here's this guy's light show on the news:
I'll admit, this one is kind of extreme.
And here's a family in Sacramento:
This last one is my personal favorite.
The HOA literally hosted a Griswold lights contest...

...and then fined the family for trying to accurately recreat the Griswold light spectacular!
Just goes to show: Grinches, Scrooges, and villains of all types don't even take the holidays off.
