Maui emergency chief resigns for "health reasons" after being criticized for not sounding alarm during wildfire that killed more than 100 Hawaiians

When I first read the headlines about the EMA Chief in Muai's resignation I figured it was because he was taking responsibility for his actions.

But it turns out that's not what's happening here.

Herman Andaya, one of the men who chose not to sound the emergency alarm in Maui is resigning, not because he failed at his job, but because of "health reasons."

Here he is explaining his choice to not sound the alarm:

Public officials are allergic to responsibility.

From the announcement of Andaya's resignation:

Today Mayor Richard Bissen accepted the resignation of Maui Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) Administrator Herman Andaya. Citing health reasons, Andaya submitted his resignation effective immediately."Given the gravity of the crisis we are facing, my team and I will be placing someone in this key position as quickly as possible and I look forward to making that announcement soon," Mayor Bissen said.

Yeah, I totally buy that this dude has health problems making it impossible to do his job right after a disastrous failure possibly resulting in dozens of deaths.
