Holy cow! The Terry McAuliffe campaign is so totally rife with incompetence. This story is so hilarious that it's hard to believe.
McAuliffe's campaign has hired a Clinton lawyer, Marc Elias, who was behind the fake news Steele dossier, trying to tie Trump to Russia. He also specializes in election challenges.
So, Fox News reached out to the McAuliffe campaign asking if they hired Elias because they were planning to challenge the election results. The campaign did not respond on the record, but thanks to one careless staffer they did respond to the story in a very incriminating manner:
So, what exactly happened here?
Tyler O'Neil from Fox News sent a request for comment to the McAuliffe campaign about the hiring of Marc Elias who is known for challenging election results.
The original request says:
This is Tyler O'Neil at Fox News. I am writing a story about the report that McAuliffe hired Marc Elias, potentially to challenge the election results. Would the campaign explain the purpose of the hiring? Would the campaign counter Turley's suggestion that McAuliffe may be planning to contest the election?
So, that's just a normal email you would send to a campaign if you were writing an email.
The reply came back from the McAuliffe staffer with the simple question:
Can we try to kill this
The problem, of course, is that the staffer didn't just send the response internally. No, she accidentally sent this message back to the Fox News reporter.
The McAuliffe staffer, in an effort to shut down the story, accidentally made it ten times bigger than it would have been by encouraging a coverup and not checking who the email was going to.
There's more. The staffer sent another email in the chain and included the reporter in the response:
"To dispute the challenges of the election."
As if it wasn't clear what they were trying to do, they made it abundantly clear to Fox News that they wanted to kill the story that they are planning to challenge the election results.
McAuliffe is big scared. A Fox News poll has him down 8 points against Republican Glenn Youngkin in the Virginia gubernatorial race. And they're lawyering up with an infamously sleazy lawyer who would challenge the results of the election.
And they just accidentally admitted it to Fox News.
