After decades of rumors and speculation, Lionsgate has announced the official release dates for The Resurrection of the Christ πŸ‘‡

Me, hearing that soundtrack again:

March 26, 2027 is Good Friday, allowing moviegoers to see the film on Easter weekend. May 6, meanwhile, is Ascension Day, 40 days after Christ's resurrection.

The date of this holiday is taken directly from the physician Luke's account of Jesus' life:

In my former book, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and to teach until the day he was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles he had chosen. After his suffering, he presented himself to them and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive. He appeared to them over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God.

Actor Jim Caviezel, who portrayed Christ in The Passion of the Christ, is reprising his role. Production is scheduled to begin in Europe in "late summer," so presumably right around now.

More from The Hollywood Reporter:

'For many, many people across the globe, The Resurrection of the Christ is the most anticipated theatrical event in a generation. It is also an awe-inspiring and spectacularly epic theatrical film that is going to leave moviegoers worldwide breathless,' said Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson when announcing in May that Lionsgate was boarding the project. 'Mel is one of the greatest directors of our time, and this project is both deeply personal to him and the perfect showcase for his talents as a filmmaker.'

If it's like Gibson's other works (Passion, Braveheart, Hacksaw Ridge, Apocalypto) then we are all in for an epic experience.

That being said, we're talking about the incarnate Son of God - the King of kings and Lord of lords, who is seated at the right hand of the Father in heaven. He was not made, like some Greco-Roman god, but is the second person of the Godhead, who fashioned the trillions of stars in the universe by His hand.

'Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me.'

When writing his Gospel account, Luke "carefully investigated everything from the very first" to ensure his account of Jesus' life included facts and corroborating eyewitness accounts.

The bar couldn't be set any higher.
