The citizens of Minneapolis are about to allow Muslim mosques to broadcast their calls to prayer five times a day, implementing a plan that's been in the works for more than a year.
A resolution last year allowed the Muslim calls to prayer to be broadcast in certain parts of the city, within certain timeframes; however, this new bill that's supported by the mayor will expand the loudspeaker calls to prayer throughout the city, including evening and early morning broadcasts.
For the residents who have never lived in a Middle Eastern country where this is typical, prepare to be blasted awake every morning at the literal crack of dawn.
Disturbing the peace and excessive noise laws will no longer apply. Two mosques already broadcast their prayers, but advocates expect 4 other locations to join when the new law goes into effect now that the restrictions are removed.
CAIR-MN executive director Jaylani Hussein told Axios the change "sends a message to the world that freedom of religion is practiced here."
Sure. To test that, you should see what Minneapolis does if Christians say they want to broadcast the Lord's Prayer five times a day!
Morning, noon, and night, Minneapolis will be rocking the Casbah.
