In a move that has been met with disbelief and justifiable criticism from conservatives, New Mexico Governor Michelle Grisham has signed an executive order temporarily banning the carrying of firearms in Albuquerque and surrounding areas. The ban will last for 30 days and is effective immediately.
Grisham justified her decision by declaring gun violence a "public health emergency" (where have we seen this play before?) after an 11-year-old boy was killed on his way home from a baseball game on Wednesday.
"This is an unprecedented step, but it is necessary to protect our children," Grisham said in a statement. "Gun violence is killing between 2 and 3 children every month in New Mexico, and we cannot allow this to continue."
The order does not apply to police officers or licensed security guards, and citizens remain "free" to possess firearms, just not take them anywhere, even if they have a license to do so (seriously).
The move has been deemed unconstitutional by many gun rights advocates, and I couldn't agree more. But the totalitarian governor is stubbornly defending the action:
"I will not back down from this fight," she said.
Sure, we all agree that gun violence is an issue, like car accidents are, but how is this a solution? Banning legal gun carriers from exercising their right to carry is not going to solve this problem. How many acts of violence are carried out by licensed, trained carriers that respect the bounds of their carry permits? I think you all can answer that question.
I am still yet to understand how banning law-abiding, licensed, and trained good guys from carrying guns is supposed to reduce the violence committed by bad guys with illegal guns who don't give a rip what the law says either way.
This is just unbelievable to me, and I hope that the good citizens of New Mexico stand up to this Orwellian overreach.
