New Mexico police officer saves baby who wasn't breathing after mom gave birth in the car

New Mexico man Miguel Covarrubias was driving his wife to the hospital to give birth when their baby decided that he couldn't wait any longer. Miguel Jr. was born in the car, but he was not breathing.

Covarrubias ran a red light right before turning into the hospital, causing a nearby New Mexico State Police Officer Ismael Perez to attempt to pull him over.

As the car parked outside the emergency room, Perez ran over to see if he could help them and found the newborn lying unresponsive on the seat of the car.

The officer's bodycam caught what happened next as Perez approached the car and began to pat the baby's back until the newborn began to cry.

Watch the video from ABC7:

The baby began to breathe before the hospital staff even made it out to the car.

Officer Perez says he just did what he had witnessed after the birth of his own children, saying,

I have three kids of my own, so I've seen the doctors do that with my daughters because they came out of the womb the same way and no crying or anything. So I did the same thing.

Covarrubias said of Perez's quick response,

It was like a sense of relief, you know, because I knew someone that knew what they were doing was helping. To me, in my eyes, he's a hero. He helped me in what I would say was one of the scariest moments in my life.

...

It lined up perfectly to where everything turned out OK. So it was and is by the grace of God.

Both mom and baby Miguel Jr. were released from the hospital a few days later and are doing well.
