Anti-gun group investigated after destroying weapons in "buyback" program, might have violated universal background check law

It kind of takes a lot of creativity to reach these levels of irony:

The San Juan County Sheriff's Office is investigating whether a Santa Fe-based gun violence prevention organization violated a state law on firearms transactions โ€” raising questions about the legality of the group's gun buyback program that for years has received accolades.

New Mexicans to Prevent Gun Violence organized a gun "buyback" (what a dumb name) as part of their gun-control fetish. Their goal was to destroy the guns, thereby achieving world peace or something.

As it turns out, strict background check laws would prohibit these kinds of transactions without, you know, background checks (the gun controllers can thank themselves for that!). Turns out, even if you say you intend to destroy weapons, the government doesn't take you at your word and requires you to be the lawful owner.

The Mensa-level geniuses actually posted about it on the Internet:

(Congrats to these people for getting my great-great-great grandpappy's Winchester off the streets!)

"Our gun buyback was canceled by the City, but local residents asked us to show up anyway," states the post, which included a photo of several firearms that had been cut in half.

Brilliant move, folks: The sheriff tells you to stop and you not only keep going but you tell the entire world that you're doing it!

That's a pro-level move right there. And it gets better: Instead of just admitting to their mistake and maybe getting into the good graces of the law, the group was like, "Um, we do this all the time!"

"We have been doing this for years. Often, police give people our phone number when they want to turn in an unwanted firearm. This doesn't violate any background check laws as there is no transfer of firearms. We simply dismantle them. All that is left is wood and metal."

The sheriff, meanwhile, is being a good sport about it:

"I don't have anything against the New Mexicans [to Prevent] Gun Violence folks. ... I just need to make sure they're operating lawfully like everyone else."

We'll be interested to see what you find, sheriff! ๐Ÿ˜‚
