If you were under the impression that sharks are the biggest bullies in the ocean, you would be incorrect. Sure, sharks might eat you, but an octopus will give you a wedgie and then proceed to stuff you in your locker.
Check out this hilarious video of octopuses (or octopi, if you prefer) just going around punching fish. According to legitimate, highly important research, Octopuses (or octopi, if you absolutely insist) deliberately punch fish all the time. Sometimes there is a reason for the aggression, but often it appears they are just...punching them.
Researcher Eduardo Sampaio witnessed this phenomenon, and he couldn't keep it together. He told NPR'S Morning Edition:
I almost choked on my regulator. When I saw it for the first time, I just burst out laughing.
The octopus is typically a solitary creature, but sometimes they take part in hunting parties. Sampaio and his team of researchers were studying this behavior when they caught the punches on film.
"You can see [in the video], some punches are almost like a small boop," Sampaio said. "And the other ones...even the whole arm curls up and uncurls afterwards, you know, like the motion of a boxer doing a punch."
As of today the researches have determined a few reasons the bully decides to punch:
Sometimes it's a partner-control mechanism, to drive the fish away from the octopus' next meal. Or it can be to control where the fish is swimming. Or it can be a form of punishment, and sometimes the eight-legged creature just punches the fish — with no discernible incentive.
