OpenAI drops "omnimodel" that can watch what you're doing, understand your emotions, and respond. I guarantee you won't believe this is a machine talking.

Holy moly, it's essentially Cortana from the Halo games.

That's not a voice actress.

That's ChatGPT responding in real-time, and not just with text prompts. He held up his phone and it guessed where he was and what he was doing in a flirtatious, natural-sounding female voice.

This isn't just the AI from sci-fi that responds without emotion. This is AI that understands intonation, inflection, humor, and other aspects of human conversation. In milliseconds, it can use your phone camera to scan the world and intuit what you are up to and talk to you about it. That should scare the everliving heck out of you.

And once this tech is in robots that look human ... well, I've seen a few sci-fi plots that deal with that.

From OpenAI:

GPT-4o ("o" for "omni") is a step towards much more natural human-computer interaction โ€” it accepts as input any combination of text, audio, and image and generates any combination of text, audio, and image outputs. It can respond to audio inputs in as little as 232 milliseconds, with an average of 320 milliseconds, which is similar to human response time in a conversation. It matches GPT-4 Turbo performance on text in English and code, with significant improvement on text in non-English languages, while also being much faster and 50% cheaper in the API. GPT-4o is especially better at vision and audio understanding compared to existing models.

I still don't think most of you are as terrified as you should be.

I'm not as worried about these things gaining sentience and wiping us all out - that's a science fiction trope.

But what about the people who control this power? How will this affect human interaction? How will it affect elections and governance? OpenAI can create realistic videos, along with natural voices - how do you know that anything you see on the internet is real?

How might that be used by the people who want to rule over us, given what they've done with Big Tech over the last decade?

Beyond that, how will it affect relationships? How will this be applied to the burgeoning industry of artificial sex? In a world with increasing population decline and less human intimacy than ever, what will be the consequences? How many families will be wrecked by entirely new addictions and vices?

On the surface, this tech has possibilities that are amazing. Think of kids all over the world being able to learn from a teacher that speaks in any language:

It could also unite our world in ways not seen since the time of the Tower of Babel:

But the fact that we are quickly approaching the event horizon of Tower of Babel 2.0 should be a warning to us all.
