The crack team of animal rights activists at PETA is at it again, this time suing the Maine Lobster Festival for having the audacity to … cook 16,000 lobsters for the Maine Lobster Festival.

No one can be certain what PETA expects the Maine Lobster Festival to do if they don't, you know, serve lobsters for people to eat, but then again nobody has ever accused PETA of operating according to any sound logic.

The Independent has more on the seemingly absurd lawsuit:

PETA argues in the suit that the festival is 'one of the most egregious violations of Maine's animal protection statutes occurring anywhere on public land in the state: the systematic torture of approximately 16,000 live, sentient animals at the Maine Lobster Festival held annually at Harbor Park in Rockland, Maine.'

One can only assume that by "egregious," PETA actually means "delicious."

For their part, the organizers of the festival are sticking to their guns.

An event organizer told WMTW they use 'traditional, lawful and widely accepted cooking methods' when steaming lobsters, and that there is no scientific evidence the crustaceans can feel pain.

But the lawsuit isn't the only tactic PETA has up its sleeve. With the usual flair for the dramatic, the activist organization plans to put on a piece of performance art at the festival, as reported by Maine Wire:

'On opening day of the Maine Lobster Festival - where thousands of sentient lobsters will be cooked alive in violation of Maine cruelty-to-animals law which prohibits tormenting sentient animals - PETA supporters will gather for an eye-popping demonstration in which a chef will drag a struggling, screaming human "lobster" to a giant, steaming pot and "scald" them alive, asking people to recall the Golden Rule of "do unto others what you would have them do unto you,"' PETA announced Monday.

As of yet, a hearing had not been scheduled for PETA's request for an injunction, and the festival starts … today.

Keep on having dominion over those delicious, buttered animals, people.
