Last night, the world's best golfer (and just about the coolest dude in the world), Scottie Scheffler, got in trouble with the Louisville Police after a misunderstanding regarding his access to the golf course.
Early this morning, around 5 AM Eastern, police closed roads around the golf course where the PGA Championship is taking place because of an accident where a pedestrian was struck and killed by a shuttle bus.
Golfers and coaches were allowed to enter the golf course, even though it was closed to everyone else.
The world's top pro golfer, Scottie Scheffler, tried to enter the golf course this morning, went around the roadblock (which he assumed was security), and then was pulled over and detained by Louisville police.
This ESPN reporter explains the scene that he witnessed.
[The tweet states that he was arrested, but he was only handcuffed and detained]
Those evil, stupid, ignorant racist police.
Just kidding, this was Scottie Scheffler, he's white. So we don't have to hear about the systemic evils of cops this time. No riots, no PGA boycotts or police boycotts. Probably no lawsuits.
If anything, we'll hear headlines like, "It's about time white people feel the fear that black people face daily" or some such nonsense.
[ESPN reporter] Darlington was standing at the entrance when Scheffler was detained. Darlington said Scheffler turned to him and asked, "Can you help?"
According to Darlington, an officer instructed him to back away.
'You need to get out of the way,' the officer told Darlington. 'There's nothing you can do. He's going to jail.'
I guess the cops weren't golf fans??
Again, Scheffler was told that players were allowed into the golf club. I'm sure the communication on both ends could have been better and the whole scene could have been avoided.
Darlington said PGA Security tried to intervene but wasn't given access to the scene.
Andy North, a former PGA Tour professional, said on ESPN, "Small confrontations happen quite frequently trying to get in and out of the property at a golf events because there's so many people trying to get in and out. Everybody's trying to talk their way in. And sometimes situations happen like this, but very seldom do you have a huge police force. usually it's more security guards, rent-a-cops, as we call them that are part of those situations."
This is WILD!
The reporter tried to explain to the police who they had arrested, but, you know, they weren't going to listen.
They cuffed him, shoved him in a car, took him downtown, booked him, and gave him a nice-looking mugshot!!
The internet's reaction, as always, is something else.
This is the latest update. There are no details on whether or when they plan to release Scheffler.
We'll keep you updated.
