Back in 2020, Shaurn Thomas was awarded $4.1 million by the city of Philadelphia when his life sentence for the murder of Domingo Martinez in 1990 was vacated and deemed a mistrial.
The conviction was overturned as a result of a review of the case by a special unit within the Philadelphia District Attorney's Office. They found pages of witness statements, not disclosed by Philadelphia police officers Martin Devlin and Paul Worrell, who had arrested Thomas.
Although the Philadelphia District Attorney's Office declined to retry the case after the conviction was vacated, prosecutors said they were not completely convinced that Thomas was innocent.
Despite the probability that Thomas was guilty, he still managed to sue the city for the 24 years he spent in prison and was awarded $4.1 million.
And now, just a few years later, the newly minted millionaire is back in prison for, wait for it ...
MURDER!!
After Thomas's case for the 1990 murder was overturned, he took his money and started a drug-dealing business.
One of his dealers, Akeem Edwards, did not pay him the $1,200 for the cocaine he was supposed to sell, so Thomas shot him.
Thomas's girlfriend, Ketra Veasy, who witnessed the murder, had these words to say:
'He said it's his third homicide and he said he can't go back to jail,' she said. He told her that he knew where her family lived โ her children, her brother โ and told her to 'keep quiet or else,' she said.
Thomas threatened his girlfriend in an attempt to prevent her from talking to investigators.
Luckily, police arrested them both before that could happen, and they were each charged with murder, though Veasy's charges were reduced to aggravated assault when she agreed to testify against Thomas.
In the end, he pleaded guilty to six charges, including murder in the third degree, so he'll be heading back to prison, and hopefully will stay there this time.
