Monmouth University Polling Institute published a poll this week showing a plurality of Americans think the United States is "more divided" since Biden took office.
The survey asked 809 adults from March 10 to 14: "Has the country become more united, more divided, or not really changed since President Biden took office?"
- 48 percent said the country has become "more divided."
- 15 percent said "more united."
- 35 percent said "not really changed."
Respondents were also asked to use one word or phrase to describe the current state of the U.S.
"The most common response was 'divided' (see word cloud image)," Monmouth reports. "This sentiment accounts for more than 1 in 10 responses when combined with related words such as polarized, conflicted, and fractured. Other commonly mentioned top-of-mind words are chaos, mess, confused, and disappointing. In all, 76% of poll respondents used a negative word to describe the current state of the country while just 15% used a positive one."
Approximately 58 percent of respondents said they feel "pessimistic about the policies Biden will pursue" in the "next few years," with 41 percent saying they are "very" pessimistic.
Furthermore, 73 percent of respondents think the country is "on the wrong track."
