Bomb squad called in after elections office receives suspicious package that turned out to be cookies

Poll workers are a vital part of our electoral system, and they deserve to be shown a bit of appreciation during this heated election season.

And that's what the Honolulu Cookie Company was thinking when they sent the Wake County (North Carolina) Board of Elections a box of cookies earlier this week.

Unfortunately, umm...

Yes, the Raleigh Police and Fire Departments responded to the call about the package, and bomb technicians X-rayed the package to determine that it was safe to be opened.

Afterward, they were pleasantly surprised to find the handwritten thank-you note and pineapple-shaped cookies from the Honolulu Cookie Company.

Wake County elections specialist Danner McCulloh said that their office is on high alert after reports of suspicious packages being sent to other elections offices have surfaced, and while he discouraged others from sending goodies to poll workers, he did note that, "It was a kind gesture."

Incredibly kind, just not very well thought out. Perhaps delivering thank-you gifts in person to your local poll workers would be more well-received.

However, on second thought, that might qualify as election interference.
