This week at the first GOP primary debate, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis put it succinctly and accurately when he said:
What the Democrats are trying to do on this issue is wrong, to allow abortion all the way up to the moment of birth.
That's true! It's very wrong! Democrats are absolutely in favor of allowing abortion up until the minute before a baby is born. No questions about it.
Go out and try and find a mainstream Democrat in office — any one, anywhere — who will actually say the words, "Yes, I believe we should place restrictions on abortion." You won't find one! That Democrat doesn't exist!
So these responses from Democrats are, to put it mildly, really, really weird:
[Language, because Democrats tend to have foul mouths]
Huh.
The message in response to DeSantis seems to be along these lines: "No way, we don't support abortion up to birth! That's horrid! We would never support such barbarism!"
To which we might reply: "Great! Why do you feel that way?"
I mean, honestly: If pro-choicers find the prospect of moment-of-birth abortion to be ghastly, we should honestly ask them why. Is it because they think the unborn baby, at that point, has a right to life that should be respected? If so, great! That's the correct position to take.
After which we might ask them: Well, what about, say, one day before birth? Is it okay to get an abortion then? If so, why?
In other words: Why are we drawing this arbitrary line between "moment of birth" and "moment just before moment of birth?" Why does a baby's right to life suddenly spring up in that 24-hour window? What's the magic alchemy at play here?
Is it possible that maybe — just maybe — the moral principle that forbids moment-of-birth abortion might also apply, you know, at some point before birth as well?
Pro-choicers, do you want to explore this a bit? Think it over? Ruminate it?
Please do. Take all the time you need. We'll be here when you figure it out.
