Remember how Elon Musk wanted monkeys to play "Mind Pong"? The dream has now become reality, but the memes are even better.

A few months ago, we received word from Elon Musk that he was going to put microchips in monkeys' brains and have them play the classic arcade game "Pong" with their minds:

Last week, the company implanting said monkeys (Neuralink) showed off how the tech worked through this video, which quickly went viral with nearly 5 million views:

If you don't have time to watch the whole thing, here's the summary:

  • The monkey is trained to use a joystick to move a cursor onto an orange target.
  • Every time he does so, he's gets a hit of banana smoothie from a tube.
  • The microchip in his head is connected to his motor cortex. Researchers can anticipate which way he'll move his hands by "decoding" which neurons fire in his head for each movement.
  • The researchers can then unplug the monkey's joystick and connect the chip in his brain directly to the computer via Bluetooth. Even though the monkey is still moving the joystick, he's actually controlling the cursor with his mind.
  • The company then shows the cyborg primate playing Pong without a joystick, simply thinking about which way he wants to move his hand to control his paddle.

This tech could allow paralyzed people to interact with computers and phones, which would be revolutionary.

But you didn't come here only for a lesson in neurotech. No, I promised you memes, and memes you shall have.

How about killer monkeys controlling virtual soldiers on the battlefield?

Controlling SpaceX launches?

How about an army of monkeys buying cryptocurrency??

Hacking enemy nations?

Seriously, think of what you could do with an army of trained monkeys!

Of course, I have to throw in a nod to Planet of the Apes:

I'll leave you with this person who wants to provide hours of monkey mind pong set to calming techno beats:
