Boston Dynamics has done it again. Every time I get over the nightmares, a new video of their progress toward the takeover of the machines inevitably drops online.
For years, people have been tracking the development of these impressive-yet-terrifying robots, like gnats drawn to a bug zapper on a warm summer night. Parody videos have even depicted what would happen should the bots decide to ignore Isaac Asimov's Three Laws and rise up against their makers.
In a video uploaded last week, one Twitter user shared a random encounter with a Boston Dynamics robot on the streets of Sudbury, Canada. The pre-Terminator bot can be seen strolling down the sidewalk, only pausing when the naive humans call out to it. It then seemingly runs a scan before continuing on its mysterious mission [language warning]:
"I love you!" shouts the woman to the bot, oblivious to the fact that she'll probably be the first person killed in the coming war.
The video, now viewed over 14 million times, had a bevy of reactions. Most of them were, unsurprisingly, fearful.
Fortunately for us, there's a bit more to the story. Apparently, there was a human operator on site, and he reportedly was testing the robot for work. Boston Dynamics' "Spot" robot went on sale in June for a cool $75k.
To assuage everyone's fears, Boston Dynamics put out a statement to convince us that the end of days isn't upon us (yet).
Since this is 2020, I'm sure everything is fine. That corporate memo totally takes away my worries about nefarious dystopian futures. If it comes to it, we'll just tack robot apocalypse onto the growing list of things we need to deal with this year! No biggie.
