Multi-millionaire Russian meat tycoon Pavel Antov died on Sunday after falling out of a hotel window at the Hotel Sai International in Rayagada, Odisha, in India.
Antov was reportedly celebrating his upcoming 66th birthday during his trip to India.
A local police official said Antov killed himself due to depression about the death of his friend Vladimir Bidenov, who was also found dead at the same hotel "surrounded by empty wine bottles" in his hotel room on Thursday.
"We are aware of the tragedy that happened in Odisha, where two of our citizens died. One of them is Pavel Antov, member of the Legislative Assembly of the Vladimir Oblast," the Russian embassy in India said.
"We are in constant contact with the relatives of the deceased as well as with local authorities. As far as we know, police do not yet see a criminal component in these tragic events."
In July, Antov apparently used WhatsApp to criticize Russia's missile attacks on Ukraine.
"It's extremely difficult to call all this anything but terror," Antov wrote in response to a story about a Ukrainian girl being pulled out of the rubble or her demolished home.
He quickly apologized for the message, claimed it was posted by someone else, and said he was "a supporter of the president and my country's patriot" and "shared the goals" of the invasion.
Many prominent Russian businessmen and public figures have died in similar "accidents" throughout 2022.
