Remember when the Maine legislature censured Republican Laurel Libby because she posted a photo and the name of a high school boy who won gold in the girls' pole vault and then wouldn't apologize for doing it

Well, now the Supreme Court has stepped in and voted 7-2 to have her censure removed and her voting rights restored (voting rights which represent 9,000 Mainers).

From Libby's office:

Today, the United States Supreme Court granted Rep. Laurel Libby's emergency application for relief, clearing the way for her to resume voting on behalf of the people of House District 90.

'This is a victory not just for my constituents, but for the Constitution itself,' said Rep. Libby. 'The Supreme Court has affirmed what should never have been in question - that no state legislature has the power to silence an elected official simply for speaking truthfully about issues that matter.'

For more than two months, Rep. Libby has been blocked from casting votes in the Maine House of Representatives following her public comments on the issue of biological males participating in girls' sports — a viewpoint that the Democratic majority in Augusta sought to silence.

This case will continue in the First Circuit Court of Appeals, where Libby expects "a permanent ruling affirming that legislative leadership cannot weaponize procedure to silence dissent."

We'll keep you updated when we get an answer on that end.
