If they didn't already know, Mexican officials are quickly learning that the new presidential administration is not messing around, as Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth reportedly notified them that the U.S. was prepared to take the fight across the border to deal with drug cartels.

According to The New York Post, Hegseth made it known during a call with Mexican military leaders after the Trump administration officially designated the cartels as Foreign Terrorist Organizations.

A readout of Hegseth's call released by the Pentagon earlier this month notes that the defense secretary 'underscored that his top priority is to safeguard the United States and its citizens, to include securing the southern border.'

Notably, Hegseth has said publicly that "all options will be on the table" and would not rule out military action in Mexican territory.

'The Secretary highlighted the importance of Mexico's armed forces continuing to disrupt cartel activities that threaten the United States, and for Mexico to continue taking steps to curb illegal migration into the United States,' the call readout continued. ‘In both calls, the Secretary and his Mexican counterparts reaffirmed their commitment to deepening bilateral cooperation between our militaries.'

President Trump has repeatedly warned Mexico that trade tariffs will be imposed — and increased — as long as Mexican officials fail to address the drug trafficking crisis at the border.

A word of wisdom to the cartels — and the Mexican government:

Now might not be the best time to test Trump.
