Texas paralegal, Jesus Lopez, set up meetings with clients at the local Burger King, offering services from his legal firm like divorce representation and criminal defense.
His first client was someone looking for a divorce lawyer.
Lopez asked to meet up at the local Burger King.
According to police, Lopez told the person he worked at a local law firm and requested $500 to "initiate divorce proceedings."
On Aug. 16, 2023, the person met with Lopez again at the same location where he requested an extra $2,500 to continue with the divorce.
On Aug. 31, 2023, the victim met with Lopez again. This time, Lopez requested an extra $2,500 for "legal services." Lopez later requested $800 from the victim, police say.
His second client was a mother trying to get her son out of jail, and he collected fees for legal work and for setting up a job for her son when he was released.
The third victim gave Lopez a total of $13,612, according to police.
He accepted cash for all of these legal fees.
There was just one problem.
Brace yourselves, folks. It's a doozy!
Lopez wasn't a paralegal at all.
Lopez was a con artist who managed to scam $21,000 out of his marks whilst feeding them whoppers.
Police charged him in three separate instances (and none of them were for that terrible pun).
There was also an incident in which he sold someone a Chevy Impala for $1,500 cash at a local car dealership.
He didn't work there either.
The paralegal/car salesman, who wasn't, is currently being held on a $155,000 bond.
Or is it all just another scam?
