Give it up for these Canadian cows that broke out of a slaughterhouse, booked it into the forest, and have been living their lives free in the wilderness for 3 months now

It is encouraging to know that, even after so many decades of erosion against our civil rights, there are still warriors in the West — in Canada, even! — living for freedom:

Between Highway 17 near Old Woman Bay, at the northern tip of Lake Superior Provincial Park, nestled somewhere amid the trees, towering cliffs, sprawling beaches and majestic Great Lake, are some cows. Golden dairy cattle, good for their milk and good for their meat. ...

On a fateful May 14, the cows were nothing more than passengers aboard a truck heading to the slaughterhouse. ... As the 30-year-old driver steered along the highway by the bay early in the morning, another vehicle allegedly entered the oncoming lane. The cattle truck veered off the road and rolled into a ditch. Between 40 and 50 cows escaped bondage and made for the forest.

Many of them were rounded up and sent to...well, we can certainly guess. Still, a surprising number persisted in freedom:

Most of the cows were gathered in the first few days, she added, but since then, there have been reports of outstanding fugitives.

As recently as the end of July, the OPP heard about a sighting of seven escapees. Since then, Nickle estimated four cows had been found and three remained on the loose.

You can imagine the respect that those three legendary cows now command within the larger cow community:

This is no small feat. These cows have actually forced the hand of the Canadian government:

[F]or the cows that remain, the [Ontario Provincial Police] says it will only approach them if they become a traffic hazard, and there are multiple complaints from drivers.

So, as long as they stay hidden and off the roads, their summer sojourn might just continue.

These cows are out here in the hinterlands mocking the British crown like:

Let's hear it for these brave bovine freedom fighters!
