A hacker was able to access Columbia University's network and make computers and public monitors in student areas display a photo of a smiling Donald Trump.
Awesome and hilarious. But there's more to this massive cyber attack, which Columbia claims was "politically motivated."
The hack knocked out Columbia's systems for several hours, during which the hackers swiped " security numbers, citizenship status, university-issued ID numbers, application decisions, employee salaries, and other private records," according to a Bloomberg report.
So, why did they do it?
In an anonymous message to Bloomberg, the hacker said they took the data to see if Columbia University was still using racist affirmative action in its student admissions, a practice that was ruled illegal by the Supreme Court.
The practice has been shown to discriminate against high-achieving white and asian students.
Columbia released a public statement, saying:
Last week, we reported a technical outage that disrupted certain parts of our IT systems. We immediately began an investigation with the assistance of leading cybersecurity experts and after substantial analysis determined that the outage was caused by an unauthorized party. While the investigation is ongoing, we have restored our operations. We now have initial indications that the unauthorized actor also unlawfully stole data from a limited portion of our network. We are investigating the scope of the apparent theft and will share our findings with the University community as well as anyone whose personal information was compromised. We have not observed threat actor activity on our network since June 24 and will continue to monitor closely for further unlawful activity in our systems.
What happens next? I guess we sit back and wait for the data to get leaked to conservative analysts and journalists for the full story on just how racist this woke Ivy League University has become!
Then, more winning!
