I like Star Wars. You might even say I love it.
I don't love it this much.
A miniature X-wing Starfighter used in a "Star Wars" film sold for over $3 million during an auction over the weekend of items both collected and created by longtime Hollywood model-maker Greg Jein.
The collection amassed by Jein, who died last year at the age of 76, brought in about $13.6 million during an event at Heritage Auctions in Dallas. The auction house said that everyone from model-makers to collectors and science-fiction fans attended, making the event its best-attended in years.
Do some simple calculation and you realize the X-Wing was about 1/5 of the entire auction take alone. All for one little rebel fighter!
You got to admit, it's pretty handsome:
My first thought was that this was the model used to depict Luke Skywalker's X-Wing in the swamps of Dagobah. But then I remembered he didn't go to Dagobah in Episode IV. This was almost certainly a prop from the climactic Death Star battle in that film.
No, this was an X-Wing used to depict Red Leader in "Episode IV: A New Hope."
He was the guy who missed his shot at the exhaust port in the trench and got blown up by Lord Vader after telling Luke Skywalker to make his run:
Yeah, yeah, I know:
Among the other high-dollar menu items at this bidding banquet was "a 'Star Wars' Stormtrooper costume that sold for $645,000."
I got a few bills I got to pay before I can start bidding on stuff at those levels.
