Houston man who body-slammed woman during mugging, leaving her paralyzed, sentenced to 30 years

Bro, look at what this kid did to this lady and tell me 30 years is a satisfactory sentence.

[Warning: Graphic]

That left her paralyzed from the waist down. She can no longer walk.

The victim, Nhung Troung, seems to be satisfied with the sentence, so that's really all that matters to me. I'd just have liked to see the judge go a little more tough on the kid.

"She's very happy," said Hai Bui with We The People Organize, who translated in English for the woman. "She feels justice has been served, she hopes that it's restorative justice - that Harrell may become a better person."

Good for her for looking on the bright side; I just happen to disagree. I mean, look at this sentence.

A Houston man was sentenced Thursday to 30 years in prison for his role in three attacks, including one in Houston's Chinatown that left a woman paralyzed, Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg announced Friday.

Joseph Harrell, 18, pleaded guilty to aggravated robbery causing serious bodily injury for a midday, Feb. 13 attack on Nhung Troung that left the 41-year-old woman in a wheelchair, paralyzed from the waist down…

Harrell must serve at least half his sentence before being eligible for parole, and he cannot appeal the conviction or the sentence, according to the terms of the agreement. In exchange for the guilty plea, two other charges connected to other attacks were dismissed.

That's a pretty sweet deal: Essentially 15 years behind bars and then parole for another 15 — which isn't even close to what this kid deserves — and then he gets those other two charges dropped. This after a judge cut his $200,000 bail in half back in March.

Not sure why you wouldn't make an example out of this kid at least.

This lady was withdrawing money to go visit her relatives in Vietnam, and instead ended up in the hospital, paralyzed. Luckily, a GoFundMe was set up for her and she was able to eventually make that trip, but life has got to have changed drastically now that she's in a wheelchair.

15 years behind bars and then the opportunity for parole just doesn't cut it here for me. You destroyed a person's life for some cash. That's worth more than this 30 years business.
