The verdict is in: Y'all really like the mushroom-toting Italian plumber.
"The Super Mario Bros. Movie" smashed box-office records faster than fireballs take out an army of Goombas, raking in $377 million globally and $204.6 million domestically, according to Comscore.
The film raced past the record set by animated films with Disney's "Frozen 2" in 2019 and easily defeated the lackluster ticket sales of Disney's newest "Ant Man" film, which didn't get nearly the traction that Marvel movies have in the past, despite introducing the new big supervillain. The "Ant Man" film made $225 million worldwide on opening weekend, but after theater cuts, Disney has only made around $235 million over the past two months. The company spent $200 million making the movie, with untold tens (hundreds?) of millions spent on post-production costs and marketing.
Could it be that the woke Mouse House is about to get the blue shell?
One of our staff members noticed the refreshing lack of woke preaching in the Super Mario Bros. flick:
Perhaps people just want fun movies they can enjoy with their families?
Unfortunately, where there's box-office success, the Hollywood sharks circle to see how to squeeze as much money out of beloved franchises as possible.
"The reset button has been pressed and the blueprint that Universal, Illumination and of course Nintendo created, will be a north star for future attempts at PG-rated family friendly video game adaptations," says Comscore senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian.
