The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) will no longer enforce a law that prohibits adults under 21 from carrying handguns in public, Dallas Morning News reports.

The change comes after a federal judge ruled the law unconstitutional in August.

"Based on the Second Amendment's text, as informed by Founding-Era history and tradition, the Court concludes that the Second Amendment protects against this prohibition," U.S. District Judge Mark Pittman wrote in the ruling.

The ruling technically applies only to Texas DPS officers and local law enforcement in Fannin, Grayson, and Parker Counties in North Texas.

DPS reportedly sent agency officers a memo on Jan. 10 with the policy change. The department has since received more than 100 applications for firearm licenses from newly eligible people.

The law effectively allows concealed carry on campus via a 2016 Texas law that allows licensed gun owners to carry handguns concealed on public college campuses.

"We will continue to monitor and adhere to the laws and rights afforded to our community, while focusing on creating a safe and welcoming learning environment for all," said University of North Texas chief communications officer Laken Rapier.
